Kampong Ayer is often fascinating and full of simple charm, and living on top of water naturally stimulates a sense of reverie.
I wanted to illustrate the calm, colourful and whimsical atmosphere of Kampong Ayer incorporating my patterns that encapsulates the essence of spirituality, Islam and Brunei culture.

This piece depicts a Silvered Leaf Monkey and its baby partially hidden in the jungle. They are known to be notoriously shy & flighty when encountering humans. I find them very mysterious & beautiful with their solemn expressions, long limbs and silvery fur. Their babies are born with bright orange fur apparently because they are so playful & fearless; they need to be easily spotted by their mothers lest they get into any trouble.
The jungle surrounds the colourful Kampung house – its guardian is a lone cat who slumbers on the porch. Yellow Simpur flowers, Brunei’s national flower surrounds it and parallels the bright tropical sun above.
