Inspired by the colourful houses of Kampong Ayer, this piece pays homage to the ‘Bunga Putar’ pattern which is a distinctly Bruneian design. I recreated the design using coloured cardstock which I hand-cut and place down layer by layer. The patterns are created into a mosaic to mimic the concept of weaving (anyaman). Brunei’s traditional handicraft ‘Anyaman’ which means to braid or weave natural materials like parts of bamboo, rattan and the leaves of other plants into a variety of products.

This piece explores the idea of cultural and spiritual identity. The Muslim believes that everything in life comes from Allah, and thus Allah is always at the Centre.
Home is familiarity, and there is familiarity and symbolism in motifs as it immediately connects one's heritage and identity to a particular place and time. This piece was inspired by the “𝘒𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘛𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘯”. I chose to pay homage to the distinctly Bruneian “𝘉𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘢 𝘗𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘳” motif among others by recreating the design using coloured cardstock which I hand-cut and place down layer by layer.
“𝘒𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘛𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘯” are fine quality woven textiles which are the main handicraft of Brunei. They consist of intricate patterns and motifs which are emphasized with silver and gold thread. The designs are inspired by the local natural environment and are created within the rules of Islamic art - strictly geometrical and floral to stay away from idolatry. Weaving has always been a woman’s activity and it is made the same way today as it has been centuries ago. It is labour intensive, and the skill and craftsmanship needed to make these textiles have been passed down from generation to generation.
Home is where one finds familiarity, peace and solace.
Also, fun fact - this piece is made out to 2243 hand cut squares ☺️
